Who knew? Your new critical network infrastructure vendor may be not Cisco, not Juniper, not Avaya, but Oracle.

Okay, it may take some steps to get there. At the start of this week, Oracle announced it was buying Acme Packet, the leading vendor of Session Border Controllers (SBCs) for SIP trunking installations. Now, most business users are still getting their heads around what Enterprise SBCs do in the context of major business-grade VoIP migrations. And Cisco is making a push for its Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE) software load, which may be many mid-sized business users’ first touch of this technology.

So the surprise of Oracle stepping up to buy Acme Packet may not translate into a big Oracle presence in critical enterprise infrastructure rather than enterprise software just yet.

But at the carrier level, SBCs have become a rather big business, and within very large enterprises SBCs are certainly making inroads.
