Could Verizon, of all people, take some spectrum or other assets out of T-Mobile in order to help AT&T get its deal done? Could Verizon buy one of the secondary or regional U.S. wireless carriers to bulk up its subscriber total if AT&T pulls ahead by virtue of its own acquisition? Could Verizon ultimately even buy Sprint?
All that is speculation, but here’s what’s not speculation: Verizon is storing up cash in response to the ongoing soap opera involving AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and the U.S. government. And it’s doing so in order to be a player in the next round of consolidation, if that starts to make sense.
